Baldness is the loss of hairs which is in form of partial or complete lack of hairs. In medical terms it is known as alopecia. It is the disease which affects the entire body but majorly it appears on the scalp area.
There are numerous reasons that become the cause of loss of hairs but it differs from male to females. It mainly comprised of:
- Aging factor
- Condition of trauma
- Instant weight loss
- Wear the hat or scarf for longer period of time
- Deficiency of iron and protein in the body
- Ringworm in the scalp
- Improper circulation of blood
- Hormonal changes
Some of the health issues also become the reason for hair loss like
- Iron deficit
- Cancer treatments
- Like chemo therapy
- Immune suppression
As every person has total 1 lac plus hairs on the head and on an average almost 100 strands per day are lost. This is due to thinning of hairs. One of the most common symptoms is that people observe and feel that hair fall is more than usual in their comb or hair brush or in the wash basin after shampooing. This is normally due to excess use of styling products like gel, moose, ironing, or dryer etc. Hair thinning can also be due to hormonal imbalance whose symptoms are different from usual hair fall like it shows oily or dry hair scalp that may sometimes cause itchiness and dandruff.
In order to find out the exact cause of baldness, pull and pluck test is conducted. Both of the tests help to identify the type of scalp, exact phase of growth and the actual defect of systemic disease. All the tests are conducted under microscope.
One other test to judge the right reason of baldness is to biopsy the scalp area. For this samples are taken from the scalp area that will clear the right picture and reason for inflammation and hair fall. Before taking the sample or patches, head is in depth examined with the help of dermoscope either in form of hand held form or video based.
Treatment of the baldness depends upon following things:
- Age of the patient
- Health condition of the patient
- Tolerance level for medication and therapies
- Duration of the course of medication
- Duration of the disease
Depending upon the above conditions, some of the medications are helpful for the growth of the hairs. This mainly includes Minoxidil and Finasteride. In this context some of injections including corticosteroid are given that prevent hair fall. One other successful treatment is hair transplant in which surgeon grafted the small patches of hairs taken from the back or side of the head. These grafting are normally relocated at the thinner areas or where the head is bald.
If someone is not willing to take the surgical treatments like hair transplant, he or she can easily go for wearing the wig. But for the selection of wig, always consider the suitable color as per the complexion, looks and appearance. So that no one look odd after wearing it.
