  • Do not get involved into activities that exhaust you out.
  • An ice bag can be used to control the pain.
  • If you are overweight, losing weight alone may relieve the symptoms.
  • One must not smoke.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes around your chest or abdomen. They put pressure on the stomach.
  • Elevate the head of your bed 6 inches by placing bricks under the bed frame. Gravity will help prevent stomach acid from moving up into esophagus as you sleep. Do not use pillows, as they tend to increase pressure on the abdomen.
  • Avoid eating large meals. Eating small, frequent, bland meals to keep pressure on the esophageal sphincter.
  • Do not eat for at least 2 hours before going to sleep. Do not consume spicy foods, and do not take enzyme supplements that contain hydrochloric acid.
  • Do not bend over or lie down after eating.
  • Also as much as possible avoid drinking alcohol.
  • Avoid eating fats or high cholesterol foods that causes bloating in the abdomen.
  • Avoid constipation, avoid straining during bowel movements and protect the back when lifting heavy objects.
  • American Ginseng helps strengthen internal defenses. Slippery Elm and Chamomile both may be given. Make up a paste of slippery elm (one dessertspoonful) mixed into chamomile tea and eat it in tiny teaspoonfuls so that each swallow coats the area. Thus is a very beneficial home remedy in hernia.
  • For hernia always consume an extra fiber in the diet.
  • Drink 1/4 cup of Aloe Vera juice in the morning and again at night. This is a very beneficial home remedy for hernia.
  • Drink warm tea in hot room and sweat it out.
  • Always try diaphragmatic breathing. The procedure follows: Lie down with both knees bent and feet close to buttocks. Feel relaxed; put both the hands lightly on the abdomen and concentrate the attention on this area. Now breathe in, gently, pushing the abdomen up under the hands at the same time, until no more air can be inhaled. Then relax, breathing out through the mouth with an audible sighing sound and allow the abdominal wall to sink back. The shoulders and chest should remain at rest throughout.

  • The use of rice has also been found valuable in hiatus hernia. A thick gruel of rice mixed with a glassful of buttermilk and a well ripe banana taken twice daily is a very nutritious diet in indigestion and burning caused by hiatus hernia. Thus is extremely beneficial home remedy in hernia.
  • Antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum that helps in hernia because they stabilize the stomachs acid. But must not be consumed in excessive amounts.
  • Limit your intake on acid building foods like caffeine, spices and alcohol to keep control on Hernia.
